If high school athletes committed half as much time to good training as they do to playing the sport itself, then we’d see better moving, resilient, confident, stronger athletes.
One of many basketball specific conditioning drills.
This post may have made it seem I don’t think aerobic work is important, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The things Aerobic work can do for recovery alone make it important, but when basketball players get in trouble is when all they ever do is jog and never get specific with conditioning. There are so many other ways besides jogging to get the aerobic stimulus we are looking for anyway. In order for the body to be prepared to face the demands of the sport conditioning has to get specific at some point. Basketball is alactic aerobic and not just aerobic. Too much jogging doesn’t get the body prepared for a season at best, and might actually make athletes slower at worst.
